-
- That's to bad really, 'cause the only advise I could give,
- will cost you of a _lot_ of money even if you'd by 2nd hand,
- for something which is ... well, let's just say 'timeless'
- - others will claim (with some right) it's outdated.
-
- And I can't even promise you, that from the very moment you
- switch on that new toy of your's, that there will be a
- shimmering light surrounding you, filling your tummy with a
- deep and ongoing satisfaction. You will have to get used to
- your new machine.
-
- But - and that's my point: there is something which definitely
- is worth your time! Sitting inside your (hopefully not
- underpowered - I'd go for a A3000, used) amiga is the thing,
- we are all so madly in love with: AmigaDos. I owned amigas
- for ages - never had another machine at home, but I have known
- and worked on a lot of platforms. True, there were things, I
- envy on other lines even today : power, 'professional' programms
- etc. ...
-
- It is sad, but (my fellow amigans will excommunicate for
- saying this) even today you wouldn't find a word processor
- like 'That's Write' (I hope I got the name right) on the
- Atari and mind you, we're talking low end software here -
- small, quick and reliable; 'high end' wordprocessors on the
- amiga are even more 'substandard'. Like spreadsheats, like ...
- Oh well, I prefer TeX anyhow... (yes, even for faxes and letters).
-
- I sat at macs and clones - some machines were - I have to admit
- - impressive. But I can find a way to do anything I want on my
- amiga - and I can do it on a system designed to give me pleasure!
-
- Point is, if you are lucky, you can have a very powerful
- tool (Pentium p.e.), but I couldn't find a machine, I could
- customize the way, I have my amigas configurated. I have a
- hell of a lot of programs I fire up on booting (startup-sequence
- and little later, wbstartup). These multitasking utilities make
- the big difference in the feeling on each amiga - making it so
- much superior to any other machine. It's like talking about acid -
- those in the know will nod at the name - but its hard to communicate
- to someone who lacks the personal experience.
-
- All I can say is - if you got the cash and the time, go for
- it (the computer I mean)! You'll get yourself a truely charming
- piece of hardware with a soul that will grow on you.
-
- My machine A3kT,3640,2+16MB,PicassoII, lots of stuff in it,
- cost me (mind you, I bought mostly used pieces) more than I
- would have to pay for a fast Pentium - but I wouldn't trade
- it, even if you offered me two of those.
-
- But the hardware is in no way 'modern'.
